About the Artist
Eckel Nyamhondoro
Zimbabwe has a rich history of folklore. This culture, like many cultures in the world is slowly fading away. In the Shona culture it has always been the role of grandparents and other elders to pass on traditional beliefs and customs from one generation to the next.
Eckel Nyamhondoro is one of those that continues to promote local tradition. Inspired by tribal mythology his art is mostly spiritual in nature. His sculptures carry mystery within them. They often take on both human and animal form. His sculptures are identifiable with their intricate chiseling.
His art is like the stories of old, each piece meant to tell a tale. Eckel often makes time to mentor younger sculptors to ensure the continuation of the Shona sculptures and folklore.
