"Theater" by Wendy Anziska

Biography

Born in 1945 in Cape Town, Wendy Anziska is an established South African painter of the highest caliber. She has exhibited within South Africa since 1970 and internationally since 1994. Her work stands in prominent corporate and private collections, as well as the South African National Gallery in Cape Town.

Her artistic inspiration is derived from deeply personal factors that include extensive world travel, motherhood, spirituality and the effects of advanced technology and mass media. According to Anziska: "... we are in an age of technology which brings us closer together but also separates. Cyberspace, the small screen and the media present an artificial world of Life and Theater, and we are left confused by what is real and what is unreal. This has an impact on all of us, and the influences permeate every level of society. I see the icons of sport, theater, fashion, entertainment and even politics imbued with an artificial reality. This troubles me greatly, particularly relative to the younger generation and their future, as they are conditioned by the 'theater' of this world."

Her 2004 exhibition at Zuva Gallery brilliantly explores these themes. Paintings like "Theater", "Crocodile" and "Who Are We" directly challenge the viewer to question perceptions of reality; while "Attachments", "Memories" and "Roses Diptych" are highly personal works for the artist. The deceptively soft "Explosion" offers cutting social commentary in today's unpredictable world. Zuva Gallery looks forward to a long relationship and friendship with this important artist.
