"Australia" by Rhett Martyn
Biography

Many prominent South African artists, academics and curators regard Rhett Martyn as one of the country's finest young contemporary artists. According to Eugene Hon, the Dean of the Arts, Design and Architecture Department at Witwatersrand Technikon in Johannesburg, Rhett has "the ability and creativity" to significantly raise the standard of contemporary art in South Africa.

Born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, in 1971, Rhett moved to Johannesburg at the age of five where he has lived ever since. A life-long student of the arts, Rhett graduated from the Johannesburg School of the Arts and holds a Fine Arts Degree from Natal Technikon in Durban. He is a qualified instructor of art and graphic design, and paints from his private studio near downtown Johannesburg.

A slow and methodical painter, Rhett blends classical drawing and etching techniques with modern abstract imagery to create innovative landscape, wildlife and urban scenes. His paintings have been described as "fresh, highly contemporary and uniquely timeless" as many viewers are unsure whether they are looking at new or centuries' old works. And unlike many of the world's more flamboyant young talents who rely on bold colors and graphic imagery, Rhett's work is understated and complex. His untitled subjects barely emerge from the canvas, leaving viewers to interpret specific meanings and large vacant spaces.

Zuva Gallery is proud to represent this highly talented artist in America and South Africa. Rhett is currently preparing for a highly anticipated solo exhibition at Zuva Gallery in Johannesburg in 2004.
