"From The Water Point"
by Mpumelelo Dube
Biography

Born in 1982, Mpumelelo Dube lives and works in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. He studied art at the Mzilikazi Art Center in Bulawayo. He has taken part in four group exhibitions in Zimbabwe where he sold out at each show. Inspired and trained by some of Africa's finest painters (including Charles Kamangwana), Mpumelelo has shown exceptional commitment and promise.

Using acrylics and oils, Mpumelelo specializes in painting urban and rural scenes from his hometown of Bulawayo. At a very early point in his career, Mpumelelo has mastered the ability to capture brief moments in time as his subjects go about their daily routines like collecting water, walking to school and preparing fires for cooking. He does not paint facial features, rather focusing the viewer on the larger scene than on individual figures. This effect also gives his work universal appeal.

In 2003, he took part in a group exhibition at Zuva Gallery in Scottsdale. Again, the response to Mpumelelo's work was phenomenal and he has been invited to participate in Zuva Gallery's follow-up young artist exhibition in November 2004. We feel strongly that Mpumelelo has the potential to become an established artist in Africa and abroad in the years to come.
