"The Revolution Will Be Televised"
by Kudzanai Chiurai
Biography

Born in 1981 in Zimbabwe, Kudzanai Chiurai is considered to be one of the fastest rising talents in contemporary African art. He is the first black student to study fine art at the University of Pretoria in South Africa where he was recently named "Most Promising Art Student" by the university's esteemed faculty. Critics lauded his recent solo exhibition in London entitled "The Revolution Will be Televised', with noted journalist Bnumi Akpata-Ohohe from Africa Today calling it "astounding".

Regarded as part of the "Born Free" generation in Zimbabwe because he was born one year after the country's independence from Britain, Chiurai has comprised a body of work that focuses on the political, economic and social strife in his homeland. Using mixed media on canvas, board and paper, Chiurai's work is extremely bold and often depicts President Robert Mugabe as a sell-out to his people. Says Chiurai "The past is being used to manipulate the present. My works attempt to break the silence between black and white and establish a dialogue that makes us aware that we are both victims of the past and architects of the future. My exhibition is a protest - the ambitions and ideals of the Zimbabwean liberation movement have been betrayed."

The African leg of the "Revolution Will be Televised" exhibition was staged at Zuva Gallery in Johannesburg in August 2004. Chiurai exhibited many of the works from his show in London, but he also completed several stunning new works that were added to the show in Johannesburg. More than 600 people attended the exhibition and Chiurai sold out the exhibition on opening night. The BBC covered the opening and is scheduled to broadcast the event to a worldwide audience in September 2004. Chiurai is busy preparing for his next solo exhibition that will take place at Zuva Gallery in Johannesburg in March 2005. The theme of this show will focus on urban myths surrounding the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa. We are extremely grateful to be working with one of the most promising artists to emerge from Africa in decades.
