Biography

Henry Symonds is an esteemed South Africa artist, educator and writer. He was born on the edges of the Kalahari dessert in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. He holds a BA in Fine Art from the University of Cape Town; a MA in Art Education from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island; and a MFA with first class honours from the Elam School of Fine Arts at Auckland University in New Zealand.

After spending 25 years in Cape Town teaching and working as a professional artist, he moved to New Zealand in 1994 where he is now the Dean of Instruction at the Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design in Auckland. A passionate academic, Symonds specializes in postcolonial studies of issues relating to settler, immigrant, diasporic and marginalized cultures. His most recent research focuses on the work of the Palestinian photographer Tarek Al Ghoussein from the perspective of the "Other", the stereotype and counter discourse.

For the past three decades, his art has been exhibited widely in America, Europe, South Africa and New Zealand. More recently, Symonds has focused on the integration of digital technology and traditional painting techniques as a medium for interrogating issues around globalization and the politics of place and identity. His current show entitled Interlocutions is a stunning blend of traditional oil painting and digital technology that reveals how people from different cultural backgrounds may interpret similar images. The show will take place on three continents with Symonds being present at openings in Auckland, Johannesburg and Scottsdale, Arizona.
