| Biography Born in 1947 in the rolling hills of KwaZulu-Natal, Hannes van Zyl is regarded as one of South Africa's premier abstract painters. He was formally trained as both an architect at the University of Cape Town and as a visual artist at the University of Natal. For more than a decade, van Zyl worked as an architect in Cape Town. Perhaps his best known statement piece is his own home/studio in the wine region of Paarl. This highly contemporary landmark is characterized by clean, flowing lines and received a Merit Award from the Institute of Architects for outstanding domestic architecture in South Africa. For the bulk of the past 20 years however, van Zyl has focused on his true passion: contemporary art. Also an accomplished ceramicist, van Zyl is best known for his complex, emotional and highly-textured abstract paintings. Many of his pieces are enriched with flowing waves and sharp ridges made from a thick silica mixture. This density serves as the perfect backdrop for his deft blend of acrylics, often applied with both brushes and a broad range of palette knives. Van Zyl is constantly exploring very personal themes about his own unique life experiences. His work is featured in many prominent public and private collections including the Didata collection in Johannesburg, the King George VI Museum in Port Elizabeth and the Sasol Museum at the University of Stellenbosch. Artist Statement for “Mindscapes” Solo Exhibition in Johannesburg 2004: “My original training as an architect and subsequently as a sculptor influences my approach to painting. A sculptural sensibility pervades in the physicality of the surfaces, the earthiness of the colors and the economic use of lines hinting at free form shapes as may be found in the early stages of a sculptural or architectural design process. Universal doubts and anxieties trigger my imagination and themes are developed according to my state of mind at the moment. I mostly work in series and a body of work may have sequential narrative theme but I try to avoid being descriptive. I strive to maintain the immediacy of the painting process as ideas evolve. By means of numerous thin layers of paint over a thick textured ground I build up with rich patina that suggests weathering and erosion, inflicted by nature and or human intervention. Further, the tactile quality of my work bears witness to my physical involvement with the medium and also is intended to invite the viewer’s touch, if not physically, then metaphorically. |
