Biography

Born in 1945 in Johannesburg, Andre van Vuuren is widely recognized by important curators as one of South Africa's legendary artists. Since 1970, he has staged 38 solo exhibitions throughout South Africa and Europe. Best known for his detailed landscape work, van Vuuren has always had a deep respect and passion for the abstract. His recent show at Zuva Gallery in Johannesburg featured 42 oil and paper works. Zuva Gallery looks forward to continue to represent van Vuuren's stunning abstract painting.

"Van Vuuren's new works on paper are soft and gentle, with the contemplative tranquility of classical Chinese watercolors. They're predominately in subdued blacks, blues and earth colors, and the one work with slashes of red stands out startlingly. They're rightly described as abstracts, but your mind identifies a standing figure here, a face in profile there. Like all good art, the longer you look, the more you see."
