Biography

Born in 1960 in Zimbabwe, Agnes Nyanhongo is regarded as one of the most important and collectable artists in Africa. She has survived and thrived in a medium dominated by men, making her work and the inspiration behind it even more unique. She began sculpting in 1980, the year Zimbabwe gained independence from Rhodesia. Her father Claude, one of the country's most esteemed sculptors, taught Agnes the basics and encouraged her to pursue her dreams of becoming a professional artist.

More than two decades later, Agnes has achieved international recognition and a lofty position within the world of contemporary sculpture. She has developed a sculpting style that is most befitting of her personality: tranquil, dignified and filled with conviction. Her sculpture often depicts the ever-changing roles and status of women in Zimbabwe and throughout the world. She has mastered the ability to capture human emotions in stone, especially the bonds shared between husband and wife, child and parent, and the spiritual world and oneself.

In 2003 at Zuva Gallery, she staged her largest international show ever. A stunning collection of 26 pieces, including four massive outdoor works from Agnes' own private collection, were featured at Zuva Gallery in March and April 2003. Agnes and one of Zuva Gallery's owners carefully put together this collection during the later half of 2002 at her studio in Zimbabwe. Agnes traveled to Arizona for the show and was on hand to demonstrate her unique sculpting style during her stay.
